Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, comes from a political tradition dedicated to the idea of Eretz Israel. In 1993, he published a book, A Durable Peace, which passionately rejects the notion of a Palestinian state located west of the Jordan. Instead, Mr Netanyahu argues that the Palestinians already have a country of their own in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Their demand for a “second” state centred on the West Bank – which he calls by its Biblical name, Judea-Samaria – would inevitably pose a threat to Israel.
